Genre can be a powerful tool to set your reader's expectations, whether you want to stick to the classics or do your own thing. I like to mix genres together when I write, taking bits I like from each. How do you use genre and genre conventions in your writing?

I also like to mix genres together. I think that sticking strictly to one genre or another would be to limiting. For the most part, I write superhero/action types stories with elements of coming of age and science fiction. One of my favorite genre conventions is the anti-hero character. Most of my main characters tend to be anti-heroes, since I love the challenge of writing a character that is neither all good or all bad. I also love to write the 'found friendly' trope— especially when I have a found family of anti-heroes. I feel like a found family of anti-heroes is something that there isn't a lot of in stories.
Nice! I love found family, it's one of my favorite things to write.
