There is a lot of different advice out there about whether or not to include a prologue in fictional novels. What are your personal feelings on prologues? In prologues that you've seen done well, what made them work? What makes a prologue useful versus expendable or confusing?

I love prologues! They can give a really good sense of where a story is going to go or set the mood or the vibe. A prologue at the beginning of a mystery can really set the scene if it's done well., but it has to be interesting. A dull prologue makes a reader put the book down.
