Working under the time constraints of the Writer’s Games it can be difficult to keep track of the technical aspects of writing. Tense is one such technicality.
What helps you stay on top of technicalities in such short time frames?
What strategies help you with tense in your own writing?
I struggle with keeping tense in my writing, especially my shorter pieces. I have to print my story out, read it aloud slowly, and circle/highlight the tenses to make sure I am consistent. It's a pain, but it helps.
I find this myself. It also helps with picking up on other issues I may have overlooked.
Recently I discovered that Word has a read-aloud function, which has saved many trees. 😁
I find that reading my work aloud, even through whispers, helps me find shifts in tense, extra words, wrong words, etc. If something doesn't feel right about a sentence or paragraph, I'll read the words in reverse order.
That is an interesting concept, how do you find that reading the words in reverse order helps? Is it because you can pick on the breaks you've missed or sentence length etc?
