A good sidekick can help move a story along, as well as provide an interesting dynamic for the reader. What qualities make for the best sidekick? How should a sidekick support the protagonist?
Oh I love a sidekick. I love a funny sidekick, a serious sidekick, and a mischievous sidekick. As long as they are somewhat the opposite of the main character, they usually work quite well. The hard part is making sure they don't completely outdo the protagonist.
I love a good sidekick, they're so helpful and I honestly root for them every single time. Even (especially) when they're supporting the villain, a sidekick is that fun, relatable character that makes the protagonist real, gives them support, and provides a comfort zone when they can't even anymore. Add in a heap of loyalty and you have a winner!
I really love funny side-kicks. I think having the side-kick exist and having dialogues every now and then or referring to the side-kick will provide a good support to the protagonist. I really haven't worked with a funny side-kick, but that's a character I am currently working on.
