Indie Author Spotlight, Episode 32

Hello! Jennifer Martin here! I'm a budding short story writer and a new volunteer at The Writer's Workout as well as a recent graduate. I have learned that breaking into the literary world can be daunting feat and so I am taking every opportunity to meet new and interesting people in the literary community, like today's guest Brice Davis.


Overcoming adversity and wanting to connect with others, Brice Davis wrote Rise Anyway: A Memoir of Survival, a memoir about experiencing challenges ranging from fatherhood to a cancer diagnosis. Hi Brice! Thanks so much for meeting with me today. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My name is Brice Davis, and I am the author of Rise Anyway: A Memoir of Survival. I'm from Xenia, Ohio, and while I never set out to become an author, I went through experiences of adversity that I wanted to share with others.


Over the years, I've faced challenges that tested me physically, mentally, and emotionally, including surviving aggressive multiple myeloma. Through those experiences, I learned a lot about resilience, perspective, and the importance of continuing forward when life doesn't go as planned.


Writing became a way to make sense of those experiences and hopefully help others who may be facing similar battles of their own. My goal isn't to present myself as someone who has all the answers. It's to share my story honestly and encourage people who may be struggling, stuck to keep going.


Tell us about your writing style.


I write nonfiction, memoir, and inspirational content for adults and young adults. My style is honest, reflective, and conversational.


I try to write the same way I speak—without complexity, filler with openness, vulnerability. My focus is on real experiences, challenges, and the lessons that come from working through them. I want readers to feel like they're having a genuine conversation rather than reading a polished version of reality.


Tell us about a project you’re proud of and link it.

The project I'm most proud of is my memoir, Rise Anyway: A Memoir of Survival.


The book tells the story of my journey through cancer, fatherhood, mental health struggles, setbacks, and the lesson I learned about perseverance along the way. More than anything, it's a book about refusing to let difficult circumstances have the final word.


What makes me most proud isn't simply publishing a book. It's knowing that my story has the potential to help someone else feel less alone and remind them that their hardest chapter doesn't have to define the rest of their life.




Spill the tea, what are you currently working on?


Right now, I'm focused on introducing Rise Anyway to new readers through podcasts, interviews, libraries, bookstores, cancer support organizations, and community outreach.


One of the most rewarding parts of this journey has been connecting with people who relate to the themes of resilience, survival, fatherhood, mental health, and overcoming adversity. I'm also exploring future writing projects and ways to continue encouraging people through storytelling.


What is your biggest/best piece of advice for other Indie Authors?


Don't let perfection stop you from sharing your work.


Many people spend years waiting for the perfect time, perfect script or strategy. The truth is that growth happens through action.


Write the book. Learn as you go. Improve as you go. Your story doesn't have to be perfect. There may be someone out there who needs what you have to say right now.


Who is your favorite Indie Author? 


I honestly don't have one specific favorite indie author.


What I admire most are independent authors who are willing to be authentic and vulnerable enough to share meaningful stories. Independent publishing gives people the opportunity to tell stories that might never exist otherwise, and I have a lot of respect for anyone who takes that leap and puts their work into the world.
