Indie Author Spotlight, Episode 17

Hello! It's me (again). S.E. Reed, your favorite multi-genre Indie Author and volunteer at The Writer's Workout. Okay, so maybe I'm not your favorite, but I am an Indie Author who has made it her mission to help you find out more about others like me. Each of these episodes features a Q&A-style interview with an Indie Author so you can get to know more about them and their writing. In addition, some of the authors have chosen to participate in a 2nd interview on my website, Writing With Reed, which I'll link at the end.

Today's episode is with someone I had never had the pleasure of meeting before in the writing community. So that was exciting, to get to know someone new. Which is fun, since her name is Sarah R. New! Sarah comes to us from across the pond... she is a U.K. indie author of adult horror. Not usually a genre I read much in, but after our interview, she had me convinced!

Sarah, thank you so much for your time today. Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hi! I’m Sarah R. New, and I’m a disabled horror writer from the U.K. I’ve been writing since I was six, and I always describe my writing as something that I didn’t choose, instead it chose me! My first story was a story I wrote at primary school about monsters who lived in the bathroom pipes; the story was passed around and I think the entire class read it!

I'm excited to hear more about your writing style.

I write a whole range of things! My primary focus are my adult horror novellas; however, I’ve also written a range of short form fiction and autofiction. Occasionally, I also dabble in speculative fiction and film analysis.

Tell us about a project you’re proud of and link it.

I’ve published two novellas so far that I am so proud of. My first novella, Amissis Liberis (2024), is a Gothic horror novella that follows two Victorian-era families through the year that leads to their destruction (https://amzn.eu/d/ePn39Po). My most recent work, Hypochondria (2025), is the story of Emma, whose health anxiety spirals after the death of her mother (https://sarahrnew.wordpress.com/hypochondria/)

Spill the tea, what are you currently working on?

I’ve just finished a graphic horror thriller from the point of view of a cat, and I’m going to be starting a dual novella project really soon!

What is your biggest/best piece of advice for other Indie Authors?

I think it would be just write what you want to write? I have never felt so supported in my career than I have after joining the indie community, and I have found that even my most experimental works have found an audience.

Who is your favorite Indie Author?

It feels awful just to pick a couple, as I admire so many indie authors, but Andrew Lyall has become one of my favourite authors. I’ve also just read A Love Most Brutal by Kath Richards and loved it.

Where can someone find your work, social presence, etc. drop some links.

I’m sort of everywhere! I’m on Instagram, Twitter and Bluesky under the username aldbera, I have my own website at sarahrnew.wordpress.com, and I also write nonfiction on my Substack (https://substack.com/@aldbera) and Medium (https://medium.com/@sarahrnew) accounts.
