Cover Letter Analysis

Here's a sample cover letter, followed by an image breakdown highlighting successes and mistakes.



Dear [Literary Agent’s Name],

I am seeking representation for my first novel, [Title], which is a completed piece at [word count] words. Given that you mentioned [add some specific details from their bio about the types of books they want], I believe my work would be of interest to you.

[Title] is a [add in a couple of sentences to briefly discuss the plot and main points of the story]. Set in [add setting], the novel follows the main characters [insert character names] as they [touch on the main conflict within the story]. [could also mention here themes and possible triggering content within the story as well]. [discuss where the book would fit on the shelf – mention the target consumer].

[Title] is my debut novel, however I do have industry experience from volunteering as an intern for The Writer’s Workout. I am also going into my final year of completing a BA in English and Creative Writing at the University of Exeter.

I’ve included [whatever is asked for in the submission guidelines - cover letter, sample of fiction, biography], and, upon request, would be happy to provide the full manuscript of my work. Thank you for considering my novel and I hope to hear from you soon.

About the author: My name is Turaya and I love writing both fiction and poetry in any free time I can find. Some of my favourite genres to read are romance and fantasy, and a story that has a combination of the two is sure to have me hooked!
